The calculator above gives an installed, GST-inclusive estimate for a residential boundary fence in Greater Melbourne. It uses the same per-metre rates we quote from, so the estimate gives you a realistic starting point for your project. Here's what each input does and what it can't account for.
Timber paling
Choose Timber Paling for a treated pine paling fence at 1800mm, 1950mm or 2100mm. Materials, construction and what's included are on our Timber Paling Fencing page.
COLORBOND®
Choose COLORBOND for a steel panel fence at 1800mm or 2000mm in the colour you pick. Screen colours are approximate, so we bring physical swatches to the site visit. See COLORBOND Fencing for panel and post details.
Measuring the metres
Enter the length of the fence line in metres. A rough figure is fine: pace it out, or check a property map or your title plan. If the fence turns a corner, add the sides together. We measure the line properly on site.
Fence height
Taller fences use more material, so the rate goes up with height. Boundary fences have height limits before a permit is needed, so read How High Can My Fence Be? before choosing the tallest option.
Removing the old fence
If there's an existing fence, select Yes and removal and disposal is added per metre. Fence Removal explains what that covers. Old concrete footings are the one thing that can add to it, and we check for them on site.
Ground and site access
Normal ground is included in the rate. Clay, a bit of slope, rock or steep ground adds to the per-metre cost because holes take longer and posts need more work. The calculator can't see access: if we can't get a trailer down the side of the house, that's priced at the site visit.
Gates
The per-metre estimate is for the fence itself. If you need a side gate in a timber or COLORBOND fence, mention it when you request a quote and we'll price it with the job. Front fences, automated gates and feature entries sit under Architectural Fences & Gates and are priced on design inspection.
Why it's an estimate
The calculator works from what you tell it. It can't see a fence line that isn't straight, rock under the surface, old footings or tight access. We confirm those at a free site visit, and your final quote is fixed in writing before anything is signed.
